Unlocking Crew Slots in Camp Progression

At the start of the game, players must manually steer the vehicle, adjust weapon directions, reload ammunition, and trigger melee swings through the dashboard. This manual input quickly becomes overwhelming when multiple enemies attack at once. To automate these tasks, you must invest in camp progression through the Tianmu Astrolabe after returning from runs.

The Device Operator node becomes available after meeting the Realm Companion prerequisite. Unlocking Device Operator allows passengers to sit at specific stations and operate equipment on your behalf. Further down the tree, the Travel Together unlock allows selected friends to join expeditions right from camp rather than waiting to encounter recruits along the trail, though launching with them requires paying additional starting resources. Investing in camp upgrades also opens up cargo space and repair options that keep crew members supplied.

Recruiting travelers occurs at rest stops in safe zones along the road. Players drag characters directly into vehicle workstation slots to set them to work. Rest stops also feature merchants offering tools, though available bench space limits how many unassigned passengers you can carry at one time.

Companion Traits and Crew Selection

Passengers in One Way Tickets possess distinct perks, and some recruits feature randomized secondary traits. Matching the right passenger to the right vehicle station prevents wasted stats and keeps your machinery functioning under pressure.

Gauss represents a direct combat option. His Combat Training trait applies a flat damage increase to the weapon he operates, making him dependable on consistent damage dealers like frontal melee cutters or auto-swinging blades. Kevin pairs Combat Training with an accuracy boost for his assigned equipment. Placing Kevin on ranged weapons that struggle to hit agile targets improves projectile hit rates significantly.

Support-focused companions alter run economics rather than combat numbers. Chan features the Overload trait, which adds 18 slots to your carrying capacity. While Chan offers no direct weapon enhancements, running him on short material-gathering runs allows you to bring home extra components needed for base buildings. Characters like Fay offer extreme damage bonuses and bonus enemy drops through specialized skills, but balance those gains with drawbacks such as the Thief trait, which can trigger conflicts with merchants or lead to Fay leaving the party unexpectedly.

ChanResource gathering runsAdds 18 inventory slots but grants zero weapon damage buffs
FayHigh-risk boss pushesDelivers high damage and extra drops, but can steal items or depart abruptly

Workstation Requirements and Device Staffing

Every piece of equipment installed on your chassis demands human attention, but requirements differ widely across categories. Simple firearms such as the Blunderbuss require only a single workstation for aimed firing. A single crew member can operate that weapon continuously without driver input.

Advanced hardware requires multiple hands. The Rotary MG demands three distinct workstations to handle feeding ammunition, rotating the barrel mount, and pulling the firing lever. If you mount a multi-station device without enough crew members to man each position, the weapon sits idle while you manually juggle inputs on the controls console.

Before mounting complex devices purchased from road merchants, evaluate whether your passenger cabin has enough free operators. A single operated cannon that fires reliably on every cooldown deals more cumulative damage than an advanced machine gun that stalls because nobody is free to cycle ammunition.

Managing Motion Sickness and Stun

Companions do not work uninterrupted. Terrain shocks, road collisions, and enemy attacks cause passengers to experience motion sickness and stun effects. When a companion becomes dizzy, their workstation shuts down, leaving that weapon non-functional until they recover.

Patch v0.8.0.4 adjusted passenger recovery items, allowing noise tools to restore disabled crew members rapidly. Keeping a Screaming Chicken or Loudspeaker on hand allows you to shake operators out of stun states quickly. If your vehicle uses heavy iron wheels to crush ground swarms, prepare for increased vibration, and balance offensive collisions against the downtime your operators suffer behind the control boards. Efficient companion management requires maintaining steady vehicle handling so your gunners and reloaders stay on their feet.
